Bengal tigers are at a crossroads as a species. Earlier this decade, there were only about 3500 tigers in India. The latest estimate now puts their population at a perilous 1400 animals. Emergency efforts are being made to expand parks and reduce poaching, but the intense pressure from the over one billion people in India is taking its toll. The tiger in this image is one of two dominant males in Bandhavgarh. His power, presence and beauty are unmatched in the natural world. taken 12/07
