Bison are an iconic symbol of the American West. Once numbering more than 50 million animals across the plains, bison are now mainly relegated to a few captive herds. The one exception to the decline of bison wildness is the free-ranging herd in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem which generally numbers around 3000 animals. On this clear, crisp winter day, a mature bull bison forages for food on the National Elk Refuge near Jackson, Wyoming with Grand Teton presiding over the scene. Sadly, the state of Montana slaughters hundreds of wild Yellowstone bison every winter as they wander out of the park in a supposed effort to prevent disease transmission to cattle. taken 11/03
