Survivor
Banff National Park, Alberta - Edition of 975 This picture is a one year old male gray wolf from the Bow Valley Wolf Pack in Banff National Park, Alberta. Wolves (and other large carnivores) have had an increasingly difficult time surviving in Banff due to habitat loss and frequent encounters with fast moving trains and four-lane highways (both of which cut thru the heart of this beautiful and critical valley). This image is called the survivor because just 3 days earlier, 2 wolves from the 4 member pack were legally trapped outside the Park. It was hard to see him alone and imagine the hurt he felt given the closeness of all wolf packs. However, I was encouraged that he was healthy and in a prey-rich area. Encounters with wild wolves are extremely rare - most close wolf photographs are of captive animals taken in game farms (although most photographers and the publishers are content to have you believe the images are of wild animals). All of the controversies aside, this is the most beautiful wolf I've seen. His thick, black winter coat and piercing eyes made this an experience I will never forget. I hope this image conveys the sheer wildness represented in this awesome animal. taken 1/03
