Third Summer
McNeil River Bear Sanctuary, Alaska - Edition of 500 Teddy is a 28 year old female who has raised several successful sets of cubs over the years. The two cubs shown with her in this image are in their third summer...and nearly as larger as she is. It's extremely rare for cubs to stay with their mother beyond their second summer - biologists aren't sure exactly why this happens. Whatever the reason, Teddy and her two sons gaze upstream to watch a smaller bear pass by. An early season salmon run, rich sedge grasses, and the blue sky of summer create a pristine and timeless Alaskan wilderness scene. Taken 6/05
