near Telluride, Colorado
The Rocky Mountains provide homes for a variety of wildlife. One of the most ingenious and beneficial inhabitants is the beaver. Their dam building creates wetlands which provide rich habitats for fish, mammals, waterfowl, birds, and insects. Mainly nocturnal, the busy animals are rarely seen during the day. As winter approaches, they fortify their lodges and fill them with food to survive the winter. The cool autumn nights bring a fresh coat of frost over the landscape. Light snow on the high peaks, vibrant autumn colors and a near-perfect reflection provide this beaver family with one of the most beautiful vistas in the Rockies.
