Daybreak Clearing
Katmai National Park, Alaska
Fall can be a magical time in Alaska. Between increasingly intense storms, breaks in the weather can be beautiful and stunning. Remaining moisture in the air created a think layer of fog over the lake and river inlet as a high-pressure system approached. The sun rises slowly in the Alaskan fall as it travels in a shallow arc above the horizon. The gradual warming of the morning eventually started to dissipate the fog and create a beautiful combination of warm light across the landscape. This large male brown bear has had a very successful summer catching salmon. In this image, he half-heartedly looks around for a few last salmon to catch before heading to the mountains to hibernate.
