While I normally restrict my photography to nature, I felt the beauty and symbolism of this particular pier justified an image. I have always been entranced by our oceans. The Scripps Oceanographic Institute in La Jolla carries out a scientific mission of discovery and preservation.A friend of mine from high school works as a researcher at Scripps studying the physics of marine mammal acoustics. Other scientists research climate change and a myriad of oceanographic topics.  The net result is a better understanding of the undersea world and our human impact on it. Countless research missions have originated and returned to this amazing pier over the years.
