Generations Black & White
Serengeti National Park, Tanzania
Elephants are highly intelligent animals with strong family bonds. Family groups are led by a matriarch who guides her herd to fertile areas throughout the year. Living 60-70 years, most females give birth between the ages of 25-45. They eat nearly 16 hours each day and only sleep for a few hours. Their behaviors and interactions are amazing and intriguing to watch. On this day in the Serengeti, a huge gathering of 200-300 elephants moved slowly across the fertile lowlands. Seeing so many healthy babies was simply a joy. Green grass, wildflowers, blue sky, and more elephants than I ever imagined in a single location, made for a day I will remember for a long time.
