Humpback Sounding
Prince William Sound, Alaska
Humpback whales are yet another marvel of nature. They somehow make an annual migration from the food-rich waters of Alaska and the Pacific Northwest to Hawaii and Baja California. Successfully navigating thousands of miles of open ocean, where they arrive at the warm waters to give birth and mate. These gentle giants gracefully glide among the coastal waterways of Alaska during the summer in search of small fish and krill. They can either feed alone, in small groups, or cooperatively create bubble nets to maximize their success. This male humpback was swimming and feeding with another male in the calm waters of the sound. They usually make 4-5 shallow dives before lifting their massive tail completely out of the water as they dive deep in search of food.
