Snow Whispers

Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming
Red foxes have an incredible sense of hearing which allows them to detect the movements, nibbles, and squeaks of mice and voles beneath several feet of snow. As they traverse the winter landscape of Hayden Valley in Yellowstone National Park, they frequently pause to simply listen. Foxes subtly move their heads from side to side, attempting to pinpoint the exact location of their prey. Once they confidently fix their target, they crouch, leap, and dive headfirst into the snow. Success rates vary, but I watched this fox catch three voles in about an hour. In this image, the fox has stopped and is intently listening for sounds beneath the snow.
