Watering Hole
Serengeti National Park, Tanzania
The Serengeti - Masai Mara ecosystem is best known for the annual migration of 1.5 million wildebeests. It is less well known that zebras also participate in the south-north-south migration alongside the wildebeests. Numbering around 300,000 in the Serengeti ecosystem, the amazing strips of the zebra are memorizing when grouped in large herds. Following the mantra ‘run first, ask questions later’ for survival, the annual migration takes the animals on a journey to find nutrient-rich grasses and life-nourishing water. The winter rains of the south Serengeti have filled the water holes and zebras seem to revel in the abundance of the rainy season as they gather together to drink.
