Zion National Park, Utah

The unbelievable erosion patterns of red sandstone throughout the Colorado Plateau are well-known and somewhat common place. The resulting canyons are typically dry and attract vegetation that can survive these arid conditions. In select canyons, high altitude, snowmelt from nearby mountains and shady conditions allow these bigtooth maples to thrive. Their stunning display of fall colors provide a beautiful contrast against the layered sandstone and patches of lichen.
